It goes without saying; I would want to know what qualifications and what credentials someone has when expounding upon great Bible mysteries. Wouldn’t you?

When one asks, “what are your credentials” one should have in mind the correct answer before asking, just as “a lawyer should never ask a question without knowing the answer”. You should not ask what someone’s credentials are without knowing what credentials are necessary for the position before asking.  If I am building a bridge then I will want to see the credentials of the engineer, I will be looking for training and a permit issued by the state acknowledging those credentials. The same is true of a doctor; I would want him to have credentials showing his training through an established medical school, and his permit from the state allowing him to practice medicine.

So first, we must ask the question, what kind of credentials must someone have in order to lead Christian men and woman in the perilous times coming upon the earth, and to expound such great bible mysteries as those of the end times? What university, and what courses must he have articulated, in order to have the credentials to speak on such subjects? How much training must he have, a masters or a doctorate? Does the Bible answer this question; does it say anything about qualifications for God’s generals? Would you be surprised to find that it did indeed gives such qualifications?

What qualifications must one of God’s generals have? In order to answer this question we must look at the life of one of God’s generals, someone who expounded great mysteries during dire times. Not that anyone of us would claim the authority of the Apostles, but we can learn principals and hopefully answer what qualifies a person to be one of God’s generals.

Let us look at Paul, one of God’s greatest generals.

Paul, says about himself, that he is “an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God (Eph. 1:1-3:3), and then gives his qualifications by saying, “How that by revelation he (God) made known unto me the mystery”.

God called Paul to be a general, an “aluf” (champion in Hebrew, the highest military rank) to the Gentiles. Paul relates receiving his rank, credentials, and qualifications, from the Lord on the road to Damascus.

Paul in Acts 22 said, “I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia” and a little later he gives the story,

Suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me. I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And, I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest. And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. (Acts 22:1-9)

In Eph. 1:1-3 Paul says, “How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery”, and reveals himself as one of God’s generals. He says, “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God” (Eph. 1:1-3:3). So once again, I ask, “what kind of credentials must someone have in order to be one of God’s generals”? One must have a “Road to Damascus experience”, such as Paul.

One must see and hear the Lord in the same type of experience. Paul goes on in the Epistle to the church at Corinth to say,

I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth) such an one caught up to the third heaven (2Cor 12:2).”

Most Bible scholars will refer this as the “Road to Damascus” experience, as they feel Paul is expounding upon his previous experience.

So in summary, once again, I ask, “what kind of credentials must someone have in order to be one of God’s generals”?

First, a “Road to Damascus” experience. Second, one must be “Caught up to the third heaven”, and lastly one must “hear unspeakable words”.

One can infer in these three examples, that anyone meeting these credentials and hearing and seeing God as Paul did, would have the qualifications for generalship in God’s army.

Simple credentials, but do you know any colleges offering trips to the third heaven, complete with a conversation with the Almighty?

Oh, while I am asking, would this be a masters or a doctorate? What do you suppose it would cost? Anybody know God’s phone number

 * A lawyer should never ask a question without knowing what the answer will be. This is a maxim that occurs several times in the Rumpole stories.

*The term Aluf is taken from the Bible, where it was a rank of nobility among the Edomites, ancient Judea’s neighbors (and often, enemies) to the south. It comes from an archaic root meaning “thousand”; “Aluf” is the one who commands a thousand of people. The highest rank in the IDF (Chief of the General Staff Rank), literally Arch-Aluf, Lieutenant General/General/Field Marshal, originally used of Joshua.

So it happened to me one day.

One of the most interesting, and meaningful experiences in my Christian life, took place. It was a hot summer day when my family and I loaded up the car, and headed to Myrtle Beach. We arrived around noon.

The family headed for the many attractions, none of which held an allure as the sparkling, clear pool beside our condominium.

As the kids went swimming, I settled down to what I considered a much needed time alone in prayer. As I was much accustomed, I began to walk the floor, as much out of habit as anything else. As I walked back and forth, across the living room, minding what I called my own business, meaning I was not seeking spiritual experiences. I had much on my mind as I contemplated what priority to give the many requests, and as I attempted to sort out this quandary, I became instantly aware that I was no longer in time and space where I had been. I had been transported my some means into the future.

I would like to give the Sci-Fi fan within me some leeway, but there were no wormholes, transporter beams, or even light shows.

One moment I was walking the floor, the next I was standing with one leg propped upon a boulder, aware that I was in a time, in the future, after my death. I knew somehow that God was showing me around creation, proud as it were to show off its many beauties. That I was upon a planet, there was no doubt.

The scene was complete with two suns, hanging low in the atmosphere, and a geology, which painted a vivid picture of massive erosion. I could only think of our Grand Canyon, but on a much larger scale. This scene was complete with clay looking sand, and rock outcrops, for as far as I could see.

There was no sound, no breeze, and no plant life to be seen, a lifeless but beautiful planet. As I surveyed with my senses, trying to hear or see something, I had not already seen or heard, I became aware of being alone. This feeling of aloneness began to gnaw away at my mind, until finally I released I was in fact, all alone. There was not a single other life on this entire planet save myself.

It was in this awareness of being alone, that the most awesome thing began to happen! A breeze began to blow, and as it fell upon me, there was a presence and a voice in the breeze. I realized what I had mistaken for a breeze, was in reality the Holy Spirit. As He engulfed me, I knew one of the greatest, but often overlooked, mysteries, was being fulfilled, a mystery which requires the death of the believer in order to experience.

I knew Him as He knew me! Let me repeat this statement, I knew the depths of God, as He knows my depths now. As I was most surprised, I also became aware that I had infinite knowledge and knew all mysteries. Searching the depths of God, all things are seen and known, for they are hid in Him. To know Him is to know all things. This I realized was the epitome of existence, to know God as He knows us. The creature knowing the depths of His Creator, and in essence becoming one with his Creator, searching the depths of His being, this is the future the writer of the Epistle to the church at Corinth knew.

He wrote in 1Cor. 13:12,
“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”

We don’t yet see things clearly. We’re squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won’t be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We’ll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing Him directly, just as He knows us! 1Co 13:12 (Paraphrased)

To see Him as clearly as He sees us, knowing Him directly just as he knows us now, requires the understanding that we will be “in Him”. This is the key to see it all as God sees it, there is an ability in heaven to be “in Him”, and to know Him as he knows us.

This is the key to eternity! We will be “in Him”, and therefore part of God.

Do you see now what God has been doing in saving mankind? Is it clearer what God’s reason is for creation; why He created Adam? God decided to reproduce Himself!

We will be in God, and therefore part of God. What will we be for eternity? We will be in God and part of God.

Please do not stone me; the above conclusions just make the most sense.

In what seemed only a moment, a flash, I returned to my body. In so returning, all of the knowledge and mysteries I had so moments earlier lavished in were seeping out of my consciousness at an alarming rate. I tried, but was unable to recall a single mystery. I was left standing there, amazed and bewildered, what had just happened?

Why could I not retain these great understandings? As I pondered this, I was reminded of the words of Paul in 2Cor. 12:4, how he,

“heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter”.

I took solace in this passage as the days, weeks, and years, flew by at what seemed at an ever increasing speed.

I believe this is where my understanding of scripture originates. I believe, what I was not permitted to retain in my consciousness, I was however, allowed to access over the years through Bible study, to slowly comprehend, and understand these mysteries, in order to write and share them with others, in order to give a little enlightenment to the great questions we as humans face. Although, the label ‘Prophet’ or “Visionary “is highly subjective; a person considered an authentic Prophet by some, will be considered a false prophet by others, or at least abnormal by modern scholars.

However, in a society that is out of control, which creates movies such as Skyline, and games such as Dungeons and Dragons, it should not find these writings unusual.

A Prophet as an individual does not fit into society; he ridicules its assumptions, its self-righteousness, and its lack of moral direction. He rants at the world, as if, it were a slum. But if such sensitivity to evil is hilarious, what should we think of the assumptions, complacency, and the world’s lack of ethical bearing, which the Prophet bewails?  The prophet is intent on intensifying responsibility, is intolerant of excuse, disdainful of pretense and self-piety. His tone and mannerisms are frequently disturbing, even horrid. His mannerisms and tone are designed to shock, rather than to consol and allow complacency.

The Prophet challenges the holy, revered, and cherished beliefs of the institutions, and the community. The Prophet knows and understands that religion distorts God, and that the clergy has committed perjury, in its toleration of moral ambiguity.

The Prophet hates the middle of the road. The Prophet is a black and white thinker, one-sided, strange, and an unbearable extremist to family and friends. A Prophet faces intolerant authorities in established religion.

The things that horrified the Prophets of old are now daily occurrences, so how can the Prophet remain quiet? Howbeit, there are many pretenders who predict peace, prosperity, and a God, who will give America another chance, if America will, but repent. America will be given no second chance, yet I find this admonition distasteful and a burden; one which stigmatizes and conjures the thought that I might be a madman. But yet, I must speak, I must warn.

“They hate him who reproves in the gate; they abhor him who speaks the truth.” (Amos 5:10)
